If you are not able to turn your head in order to look to both sides and backwards, a code is entered in your driving licence, saying that your car must be equipped with special mirrors enabling you to orientate properly.
It is the same authority that issue drving licences that make these tests.
The codes (several special conditions) that might be entered in your driving licence are common for the countries in the European Union.

AS’li kişi eğer başını sağa sola ve arkaya bakmak için çeviremiyorsa ehliyetine arabasını özel tertibatla (özel ayna sistemi gibi) kullanması gerektiği yazılıyor. Ehliyet herkese ehliyet veren kurum ya da kuruluş tarafından veriliyor. Bir çok Avrupa ülkesinde de benzer uygulama vardır.


Dear Tuncay,
In Canada their are no specific restrictions for any disease that would prohibit a person from getting a drivers license. As long as you pass the written and driving test you will get a license. If necessary some AS patients may use a special rear view mirror to assist them when driving. Hope this helps.

In the Netherlands there is no special arrangement for drivers licence for AS patients.
(I would say of cause not, because no two AS-patients are the same)
Just the oppersite. I know some AS-patients who have special arrangements in there car,
like special and extra mirrors, and they have a special exam to do on individual basis.

So my advise would be. Decide on individual basis never on behalf of a decease
because it depends on the level and condition of the sickness.

In the UK if you already hold a driving license and you develop a medical condition (such as AS) which could affect your driving, by law you must inform the DVLA (Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency). You must also inform the DVLA if a medical condition (such as AS) you have already informed them about gets worse. If people are unsure whether or not to inform the DVLA about a medical condition they are advised to ask their GP for advice.

If you are applying for a driving license, the application form has a health section which must be completed. The DVLA must be informed in this section if your AS might affect your driving.

Thus, it is likely that an AS patient may keep their driving license if they are able to drive with the use of special equipment.

In our country patients with AS can apply for a driving licence as any
other adult, and get it after passing the corresponding examination.
I have a driving licence since 1964 and look into my mirrors very
carefully when driving backwards.
